Player Pathway

GHFA player pathway is shown in the diagram below. Note that for clarity in the diagram, links from local Clubs direct to NPL Youth or Seniors are not shown, but such pathways are acceptable.

GHFA runs Academies for Under 6 to Under 12 age groups where players receive specialist training by qualified GHFA coaches in addition to their Club training and matches.

When players reach the Under 9 age group they can seek selection either in the Skills Acquisition Program (SAP),  or continue with the GHFA Academies which allow them to continue to train and play matches with their local Club. Players selected into SAP train and play matches within the Football NSW program.

Players reaching the Under 13 age group can seek selection either in the SpiritFC Youth teams which train and play matches within the Football NSW program, or in the GHFA Regional Conference teams where they train and play matches with their local Club, whilst they also receive additional training from qualified GHFA coaches and play once a fortnight in the FNSW Regional Conference competition.

Player Pathway 2016

Spirit FC

Spirit FC is the elite football program run by GHFA. GHFA enters Spirit FC teams in the Football NSW PS4 National Premier League NSW Mens 2 which is the second division of the Tier 1 league of men's football in NSW. The PS4 National Premier League NSW Mens 2 competition consists of 14 teams competing in a round-robin structure where each side plays one another twice; upon completion a Premier is crowned.

Spirit FC Seniors teams are entered in First Grade, Under 20 and Under 18 competitions, with SpiritFC Youth teams in Under 16, 15, 14 and 13.

Selection to the Spirit FC squads is merit based, and draws on players from inside and outside the GHFA association boundaries.

Selection trials for Spirit FC are normally held in the September to November period of each Calendar year. Our squads for SAP and Youth teams are finalised for 2017.

If you are an U20 or First Grade player seeking a trial, please send your playing CV to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Skills Acquisition Program (SAP)

The Skills Acquisition Program (SAP) is a Football NSW program run under the FFA National Curriculum for the development of Under 9, 10, 11 and 12 age group as preparation and transition of selected Club players to elite football (SpiritFC) in the Under 13 age group.

Players can only come from within the GHFA boundaries, they cannot trial unless they actually live within the boundary and they cannot play with their previous Clubs once selected for SAP. They train 3 nights a week with SAP from November to September and play every weekend in the FNSW SAP competition from March to September except for 2 weekends when they play in a FNSW Gala Day.

Selection trials for SAP are normally held in the September to November period of each Calendar year. GHFA will advise the date and times of trials via this website.

Association Youth League (previously Regional Conference)

2013 was the inaugural year of the Regional Conference, initiated as an outcome of the FNSW Competitions Review to provide a development opportunity for aspiring footballers between grassroots football and the FNSW National Premier League Men's competitions. In 2017 this was renamed the Association Youth League and is comprised of Football Associations affiliated to Football NSW. The competition is offered to boys in the age groups of U13, U14, U15 and U16.

AYL teams players play every weekend from March to September and do not play for their local club.

Squads are for Under 13, 14, 15 and 16 Age Groups and complement existing FNSW NPL Mens 1 & 2 squads at these Age Groups, and as preparation and transition squads for FNSW NPL Youth squads.

AYL players come from local GHFA Clubs deliver benefits to the local GHFA member Clubs:

  • the players receive special training and experience that they can ultimately take back to the Clubs
  • SpiritFC have the opportunity to observe and train potential representative grade players
  • SpiritFC has greater opportunity to work with new, qualified coaches

Selection trials for AYL are normally held in the October to December period of each Calendar year. GHFA will advise the date and times of trials via this website.

GHFA Academy Program

GHFA runs Academy training squads for Under 8 to Under 12. Players must be registered with a GHFA Club team thus making it a GHFA only Academy.

The Academies are an additional training program for players wanting higher level coaching than they get with their local Clubs.

Selection trials are held for Under 8 to Under 12 squads. U13 to U16 are chosen at AYL trials in the previous year.

There is no Academy for U6 to U7 age groups. If you wish to develop your child contact our development partner at Soccer Kickstart

The GHFA Academy is coached by qualified coaches on one night per week, on Monday night from May to August. They do not participate in matches or tournaments outside their Club team. There are 4 Academies:

* U8 to U10
* U10 to U12
* U13 to U16
* Goal Keeper Academy (U9-U15)

Trials are normally held in April each year. Details on dates for trials are published on this website once finalised.
